Puzzle #120 May 2011 "Side Effects"
Instructions:
Guess the words defined by the cryptic clues (answers vary in length from three to eleven letters; four are capitalized, one is foreign, and four consist of more than one word), then enter them in the grid one after another in the same order as their clues starting in the upper left corner. Across words that don't end at the right continue on the next row, and down words that don't end at the bottom continue in the next column. Warning: One answer is to be entered in the grid in a non-standard way, and nine others won't fit in the grid unless one of their letters is excluded from the grid in a systematic way, which solvers are left to determine. The nine excluded letters spell a familiar two-word phrase. Thanks to Kevin Wald for test-solving and editing this puzzle.
